Yorktown, NY

The Town of Yorktown is located 35 miles north of New York City, in Westchester County.  Yorktown has 36,000+ residents. The town is comprised of five hamlets: Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Jefferson Valley, Crompond, and Yorktown Heights. Incorporated into Yorktown’s boundaries are parks and other open spaces, including the 960-acre Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park.  Benefits for town residents include activities such as ice skating, swimming, the North County Trailway bike path, recreational sports, and hiking on the nature trails. Yorktown is bisected by the Taconic Parkway, which provides an easy route to White Plains, New York City, or Poughkeepsie.

Yorktown maintains a diverse housing profile.  Single family homes above $1 million are the exception.  The median listing price of a home is $389,000, an average of $216 per square foot.  Yorktown’s affordability is attributed to robust condominium building in the 1980’s and the perception that Yorktown is a rural backwater.  The reality is that Yorktown is home to name brand shopping (see the Jefferson Valley Mall), a generous mix of chain and mom & pop retail shops in its hamlet centers and along State Route 6, and diverse dining offerings.

Yorktown was settled in 1683 and has many ties to Revolutionary War events.  The town was incorporated in 1788.  It was named in honor of Yorktown, Virginia where the Continental Army had a huge victory during our country’s fight for independence.
